Okay, let's go buy a diamond. (Do we need a reason? There are plenty of them:
to celebrate...to commemorate...to reward...to romance. You decide. A diamond is the gift for all seasons.)
Now, let's take the escalator to the top floor of the world famous Marmalade Skies
Mall. Lucy's is your destination--a trend-setting jewelry store with a great selection and a Deccan Graduate Gemologist on
staff.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green tower over your head, as Lucy herself greets
you with a handshake and a smile. Lucy offers you a seat at the counter and announces, "At Lucy's we pride ourselves on being
a teaching store as well as a selling store. Since you're interested in diamonds, let's begin with a little lesson on our
first of the essential Four Cs...color."
Lucy pulls out a tray of four nearly identical diamonds. "The color of each of these
diamonds affects its value," she tells you. "Can you arrange them in order of color value?"
You look into Lucy's kaleidoscope eyes like she's crazy. "How can I do this?" you
think. "I'm a shopper, not a jeweler."
Lucy laughs. She knows exactly what you're thinking, and she's ready for you. "Try
my resources," she says. "They'll tell you all you need to know to arrange these four diamonds on the diamond papers in order
of value from left to right, beginning with the most valuable." |
